"A Mine of Rubies"

Last night I learned how to be a lover of God,
To live in this world and call nothing my own.

I looked inward
And the beauty of my own emptiness
filled me till dawn.
It enveloped me like a mine of rubies.
Its hue clothed me in red silk.

Within the cavern of my soul
I heard the voice of a lover crying,
"Drink now! Drink now!" -

I took a sip and saw the vast ocean -
Wave upon wave caressed my soul.
The lovers of God dance around
And the circle of their steps
becomes a ring of fire round my neck.

Heaven calls me with its rain and thunder -
a hundred thousand cries
yet I cannot hear. . . .

All I hear is the call of my Beloved.

Last night my teacher taught me the lesson of poverty,
having nothing and wanting nothing.

I am a naked man standing inside a mine of rubies,
clothed in red silk.
I absorb the shining and now I see the ocean,
billions of simultaneous motions
moving in me.
A circle of lovely, quiet people
becomes the ring on my finger.

The the wind and the thunder of rain on the way.
I have such a teacher.

Do angels watch while you sleep? Or do demons chase you, for your soul to keep? O' how I dread to rest my weary head, Because I believe there are monsters beneath my bed? I shudder at the thought of to be after midnight Much less sleep
Will you watch? Will you watch the full moon rise tonight Will You watch the stars dance in the sky Do you love the hour of midnight? You can catch me gazing at the moon Around this quiet time in the western sky When the nightingale sings in the trees Until the sun rises in the morning sky Will you watch the rain as falls gently Will you watch the drops fall from heaven Do you love the smell after the rain stops You can watch me dance in the rain While the drops fall when the air is warm When the air is cold I dance not But after winter departs I am the rain Dancing until all the rain is all gone Will you kiss the clouds Will you hug the rays of sunshine Do you love the loneliness of a quiet afternoon Do you miss me during these moments Will you love me without fear of losing me Is there anything that you fear other than death Is there anything you want more of than unconditional love Is there anything worth chasing, winning and losing other than love Do you stare in the mirror and i...
